Following a talk held in the Village Hall we were pleased to find that there is concern at the impact mankind’s modern lifestyle is having on our planet: burning of fossil fuels, increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and creating climate change. A group was subsequently formed in Broadhempston and have been aiming to show how we can all make a difference. We have shown Al Gore's film 'An Inconvenient Truth', had stalls at village events with books, information and recycled items and held competitions which highlight energy-saving or recycling. There have been regular book, CD & DVD exchanges in the village hall with home-made cakes and real coffee! These continue to be a great success. We also do our own bit of community recycling of tetra-paks (milk cartons etc.), which are not collected separately by the District Council. We have organised a bin in the village square for people to use for this purpose and which is emptied by the group (voluntarily) and taken to a site from where they are collected for recycling.
The group has been active since the summer of 2007. More members are always welcome so if you are interested in joining or helping at one of the events, please contact: Judy
